Self-Study Guidelines

  • Child Care Home Providers are required to have 12 hours of annual training each year.
  • Center Based Providers are required to have 20 hours of annual training each year.
  • This training is in addition to CPR/First Aid Training, and must be relevant to early childhood.
  • The following information must be documented and available for the licensing worker: date and time of training, length of time, location, and type of training.
  • When possible, more than one face-to-face training (e.g. workshops, classes, conferences, etc.) where the provider can interact with the instructor and others is preferable. However, alternate means are acceptable within the following restrictions:
Individualized Training Through Media

Books: 2 hours maximum credit per book
Video: 1 hour credit maximum per video
Internet: 2 hours maximum credit per topic

*Exceptions may be given by C.A.R.E.S. staff.

How Media Time will be Documented
  1. Written or Oral Report: The provider may select their materials and write a brief report or give an oral report to C.A.R.E.S. staff. Please be sure reports are legible (typed or written in ink), have the date, your name and address as well as the title of what you are reporting on. The report will summarize the contents of the material and discuss at least 3 things learned from studying the material or three things you can apply to what you are doing. Written and oral reports do not have to be written or given in English. If reports are presented or written in a language other than English, please allow extra time for an interpreter before certificates are issued.
  2. Study Guides: Some materials available through the Resource Library or the series being shown on Alaska One have Study Guides available. The provider may respond to the questions in writing or give an oral report to C.A.R.E.S. staff. Study Guides do not have to be written or given in English. If Study Guides are presented or written in a language other than English, please allow extra time for an interpreter before certificates are issued.
  3. Documentation of Hours:
    • The written report or the study guide needs to be turned into C.A.R.E.S. staff for a certificate. This certificate is your documentation of training. One certificate will be issued for each material you study.
    • Certificates can be issued usually within 2-3 working days. They can be mailed to your home or you may pick them up.
Reminder: This report is a reflection of you and the work you do in your profession. Put in your best effort!
